Fresh air in a slacking genre!
I have never been into fantasy series. I find them childish, difficult to follow, and sometimes even ridiculous (just think about “Bring it on, Ghost!”, “W: Two Worlds,” or “Bride of the Water God”). However, “Alchemy of Souls” is different.
At first, I was hesitant to watch it. I mean, just read the synopsis. It isn’t compelling. Nevertheless, the second season had just come out, and I loved its cast. Come on, it had Lee Jae-Wook and Go Young-Jung (if you haven’t watched “Law School” yet, you are missing out on one of the best dramas you will ever watch). Therefore, I decided to give it a chance. It was the best decision I made that year.
The first season starts with a bang! Thrilling, funny, taking unexpected twists. However, I admit that during the last episodes, certain scenes were unnecessary.
On the other hand, the second season was perfect. I can only praise it. Most of the time, second seasons are excessive and disappointing. On the contrary, this one filled in all the missing gaps flawlessly. If the first season was good, the second was even better!
All in all, “Alchemy of Souls” made me realize that I can open up my heart to fantasy. It doesn’t inevitably have to be childish, and by pairing it up with a good romantic plot, it can be a surprisingly good genre. “Alchemy of Souls” is a must-watch drama.
Synopsis
The fate of these people become twisted due to “hwanhonsool” (the soul of the dead return to the living).
In the country of Daeho, Jang Uk comes from the noble Jang family. He holds an unpleasant secret about his birth, which people all around the country talk about. He is troublemaker. Jang Ukk happens to meet Mu-Deok. She is an elite warrior, but her soul is trapped in a physically weak body. She becomes Jang Wook’s servant, but she also secretly teaches him how to fight.
Seo Yul comes from the noble Seo family. He seems perfect with good appearance, intelligence, and strong martial arts skills. Go Won is the crown prince of Daeho. He hopes to become a generous king.
