A Gothic Teen Hit That Doesn’t Disappoint
Wednesday takes the Addams Family idea and turns it into a funny and mysterious series. Centered on the daughter of the family, Netflix’s Wednesday dives into the life of Wednesday Addams, the eldest daughter of the Addams Family, who is starting her studies at The Nevermore Academy.
I have been raised watching the Addams Family movies and musicals (my dad is a big fan!). Therefore, at first I was hesitant to watch Wednesday. However, it was far from disappointing. Netflix has perfectly shared the gothic essence of the Addams Family.
Is the Wednesday series scary? Absolutely not. It has a mysterious and thrilling plot, of course, but I wouldn’t call it terrifying. It leans into dark humour and gothic aesthetics, because really, it wouldn’t be the Addams Family without black. If you are worried about Wednesday being too scary, don’t worry. It’s spooky at times, but never truly frightening. Trust me, I’m a coward when it comes to scary series and films.
What makes this Netflix series stand out is Jenna Ortega’s exceptional portrayal of Wednesday. The faces, the voice, the walk… Everything is perfection. I believe casting Jenna Ortega was the best decision the directors could make. However, Wednesday wouldn’t be so acclaimed without the rest of the cast. It’s good to see new faces on TV. Lately, Netflix series have similar actors, so it’s refreshing to see new young actors on camera.
Now, the question we’ve been waiting for: Is Netflix’s Wednesday worth watching? 100% yes! Wednesday is one of those series that has earned its popularity. Don’t be afraid of getting disappointed; the Addams Family never lets down.
Synopsis
Wednesday Addams is expelled from her school after dumping live piranhas into the school’s pool in retaliation for the boys’ water polo team bullying her brother Pugsley. Consequently, her parents Gomez and Morticia Addams transfer her to their high school alma mater Nevermore Academy, a private school that was established for outcasts and monsters, in the town of Jericho, Vermont. Wednesday’s cold, emotionless personality and her defiant nature make it difficult for her to connect with her schoolmates and cause her to run afoul of the school’s principal, Larissa Weems. However, she discovers she has inherited her mother’s psychic abilities, which allow her to solve a local murder mystery.
