More Than Just Romance

Can a drama about everyday struggles really leave such a deep emotional impact? Well, I suppose it can.

Our Unwritten Seoul is a series centered on two identical sisters: Mi-Ji and Mi-Rae. One is unemployed and living with her mother, while the other works at a large firm in Seoul. Even though the story doesn’t rely on mystery or dramatic twists, I admit this kdrama has much to offer.

More than a cheesy romantic kdrama, Our Unwritten Seoul shows a story of self-discovery and self-improvement. Not only do we see how two adults struggle to find themselves, but the watcher feels identified with them. At the end, who doesn’t feel stuck in an endless routine? Feeling exhausted the moment you wake up? Having an identity crisis every other week? As a student, I can empathise with them very easily.

Of course, Our Unwritten Seoul has its romance and humor, but they are just an accessory. It is a kdrama with an emotional storyline, far from the conventional kdrama struggles and closer to real life.

Needless to say, the cast is impeccable. I got to see a new side of Park Bo Young, since I only knew her from Strong Woman Do Bong Soon. I admit, I was surprised by her capacity to interpret two completely different characters, like Mi-Ji and Mi-Rae, with such ease and perfection.

Would I recommend watching Our Unwritten Seoul? Yes. It may not be the best kdrama you will watch, but at least it will be a memorable one. Thanks to this series, you will learn to forgive yourself and to trust in your capacities.
